Cubicles offer a simple, efficient way to maximize workspace, creating semi-private workstations and accommodating more workers than banks of traditional offices. However, they also collect lots of dust and dirt, become a hot stop for hidden germs and bacteria, and, unlike painted office walls, you canโt just wipe them down with a wet rag when they get dirty. Cubicle walls require special care to keep clean.
Offices usually have a cleaning schedule for their carpets and hard floors but the upholstered walls of their cubicles are often neglected and overlooked. However, itโs important to add your cubicle panels to your regular cleaning schedule. At the very minimum, cubicle walls should be professionally cleaned every quarter, but monthly cleanings are your best betโespecially in high-volume spaces and/or pet-friendly offices.
As cubicle wall construction materials are stackable, allowing workers to attach a variety of notes, hanging file holders, framed decor and other items, most employees like to personalize their space. However, this can lead to a build-up of clutter. If cubicle walls are cleaned regularly, employees have an opportunity to rearrange and discard old photos and mementos from the walls. To prepare for cleaning, the first step is to remove all items attached to the walls and shift all furniture away from the walls so every area is easy to access. Make sure to always seek assistance when moving heavy or fragile items.
When cleaning, the most important thing is to remove as much dust, loose dirt and any other particulates that may be clinging to or that have settled into the fabric fibers as possible. Regular cubicle wall cleaning can keep dust mite populations at bay. Start by using a clean, dry rag or microfiber cleaning cloth to wipe the walls from top to bottom to remove the initial layer of dust. After wiping, use the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner to suck up any lingering dust bunnies on the walls. With regular vacuuming using a HEPA filter, allergens in your fabric panels can be controlled, helping to improve your officeโs overall indoor air quality and workplace wellness.
Next, any stains should be pre-treated with a spot cleaner. The fabric walls will respond to either a solvent or water-based cleaner. Make sure to test a small, inconspicuous area with the spot remover before treating the stain. Look to ensure the color isnโt fading and the fabric isnโt becoming damaged. Spills and stains on cubicle walls from coffee, soda or food are ugly and unhealthy, not to mention they provide a breeding ground for bacteria and bad odor. Dirty hands can also leave behind grimy marks as well as negative impressions of your office on guests. A good deep cleaning can remove stains and bodily oils while keeping your cubicle walls looking great. Remember, the longer any material sits on the fabric, the more difficult it is to remove the spot.
Lastly, mix a cleaning solution of 1/4 cup mild laundry detergent with 1 quart of warm water. Stir the mixture well so that a plethora of suds fill the bucket. (Youโll be cleaning your wall panels with the suds rather than the liquids since too much moisture on the walls could lead to water damage, mold and odors.) Then, collect the suds onto a scrub brush or damp sponge and gently scrub the wall panels in a circular motion. Finish by wiping the soap off the walls with a clean, damp towel and ensure proper drying by strategically placing a few fans around the cubeโdirecting airflow towards the panels.
As you can see, cleaning cubicle walls can be a tedious task. Offices with multiple cubicles may find it more efficient and less hassle to leave this type of cleaning endeavor to a professional team.
